WEEK 10

Assalamualaikum :)

For this week, it is the important day for FYP1 student that is Presentation day. This is held at Dewan Gemilang and the seated is set for all the students that takes part in FYP 1. For this day, all the student have to present all 9 week of work in average 10 minutes time. All students has their own assessors given by the lecture. For my assessors is Mr Razif and Miss Najiyah from electrical section.

WEEK 9

Assalamualaikum :)

For this week, I prepare the slideshow for project presentation for FYP1. I have been ask from my supervisor to prepared draft of a slide presentation. So, my advisor can check my slide and improve the content of the slideshow. So this is my slide show for this presentation look alike. I hope my presentation went well on that day.

WEEK 8

Assalamualaikum :)

For this week, I want to show my estimated budget for this project. Since this is just estimated cost so maybe there are some changing in the future. This is the equipment and the budget for this project.

WEEK 7

Assalamualaikum :)

For this week, I want to share what circuit that I used to maintain the output voltage for this wind turbine. I used Buck-Boost converter to make sure that the output voltage maintain at the range of 12V. This is the example circuit that I will used for this project.

Gantt Chart

Assalamualaikum :)

This time I want to show my gantt chart for my FYP 1 project progress for this semester. So this is my gantt chart for my FYP 1 project.

WEEK 6

Assalamualaikum :)

For this week, I want to discuss about the blades design that suitable and effective for this mini wind turbine project. There are many several factor that need to be caution because it will effect the progress of the wind turbine.

BLADES DESIGN
Use aluminium and composite materials in their blades has contributed to low rotational inertia, which means that newer wind turbines can accelerate quickly if the winds pick up, keeping the tip ratio more nearly constant.
The speed and torque at which a wind turbine rotates must be controlled for several reasons:
·         To optimize the aerodynamic efficiency of the rotor in light winds.
·         To keep the generator within its speed and torque limits.
·     To keep the rotor and hub within their centrifugal force limits.
·         To keep the rotor and tower within their strength limits.
·         To reduce noise.

BLADE COUNT
  • The determination of the number of blades involves design considerations of aerodynamic efficiency, component costs, and system reliability.
  • Aerodynamic efficiency increases with number of blades but with diminishing return.
  • Component costs that are affected by blade count are primarily for materials and manufacturing of the turbine rotor and drive train.
  • System reliability is affected by blade count primarily through the dynamic loading of the rotor into the drive train and tower systems..
  • Finally, aesthetics can be considered a factor in that some people find that the three-bladed rotor is more pleasing to look at than a one- or two-bladed rotor.
BLADE MATERIAL
  • Wood and canvas sails were used on early windmills due to their low price, availability, and ease of manufacture. Smaller blades can be made from light metals such as aluminium

WEEK 5

Assalamualaikum :)

For this week, I want to tell you about my block diagram for my final year project. This is my block diagram for the wind turbine generator project.

Wind
Wind is the source for this generator system. It is a natural energy source.

Fan Blades
Fan blades rotates when wind is detect. The speed of the fan blades depends on the wind.

Motor
Motor in the fan blades that makes the blades rotates.

Generator
When the fan blades is rotates, the generator will generate voltage from the rotation of the fan blades

Output
The value of voltage produce by the generator from the wind energy

WEEK 4

Assalamualaikum :)

For this week, I will tell you about the theory of wind turbine generator. This is an explanation what is my project is about theoretically.

So how do wind turbines make electricity? Simply stated, a wind turbine works the opposite of a fan. Instead of using electricity to make wind, like a fan, wind turbines use wind to make electricity. The most common wind electricity-generating method is using wind turbines. The wind turns large turbine blades, which spins a generator shaft and produces electricity. A wind turbine is connected to a house, battery bank, and/or the state electricity grid. The electricity can then charge batteries, be connected to a building’s mains power, or connected to the national power grid.

The terms wind energy or wind power described as the process by which the wind is used to generate mechanical power or electricity. Wind turbines convert the kinetic energy in the wind into mechanical power. This mechanical power can be used for specific tasks (such as grinding grain or pumping water) or a generator can convert this mechanical power into electricity.

Figure 1: Wind Energy Process

Modern wind turbines are actually a pretty simple concept based on age-old science. The inherent kinetic energy in moving wind spins two, three, or even four propeller blades which are connected to a rotor hub. This rotor spins a central shaft through a gear box, which dramatically increases the rotational speed of the shaft. The shaft then in-turn spins a generator which makes electricity.

The generator makes the electricity through electromagnetic induction, the result of a conductor (coiled wire) moving through a magnetic field (magnets). This electricity can then be stored in batteries for later use or sent out to the power grid. In order for a wind turbine to be effective and efficient, they should be mounted as high as possible and capture wind speeds above 10 miles per hour.

WEEK 3

Assalamualaikum :)

For the third week, my proposal for wind turbine charger need to be change because my supervisor did not approve it. Instead, I just have to done a model of wind turbine generator. After confirmation with my supervisor, I have decided to do a wind turbine generator with the title of " A Study of Wind Turbine as a Small Scale Generator ".

My advisor asked me to find co-supervisor since when she's not in the university I have someone to be referred to. Then I need to do a draft about this project and need to send it to my supervisor since she wants to know the process and details about my project. I need write my process and progress of my project in log book and blog. It is easier for my supervisor and co-supervisor to know the progress of my project.

WEEK 2

Assalamualaikum :)

For week 2, I need to brainstorming about what should I do for Final Year Project (FYP). I need to choose between doing research or make a product/project. I choose to make a some research and make a project that related to the renewable energy. I came with an idea to make a hand phone with wind turbine generator. It is just rough idea at the beginning. I send my proposal to my supervisor Madam Rohaida to get permission and opinion from her. If Madam Rohaida approved my proposal then I can proceed with the project.

WEEK 1

Assalamualaikum :)

First of all my name is Muhammad Saufi Bin Mohd Ishak and I'm taking Bachelor of Engineering Technology in Electrical at University Kuala Lumpur British Malaysian Institute (BMI). This year I was in semester 6 and maybe my final year on this university before I go for practical on semester 8. During semester 6, all student must do their own final year project(FYP) and they given 1 year to complete their final year project. This blog is created to know the process of my final year project activities for the whole 1 year until I finish my final year project.

All the student has been briefing about this FYP 1 on 7th February 2014. All the information about FYP 1 has been brief during the talk. We have given a task to do research or make a product for our final year project. So for the first week I need to think task should I do, research or make a product. We also need to find a supervisor to help and guide us during our FYP time.
